I am a qualified Chemistry teacher with over 17 years experience of teaching in a classroom, and 12 years experience of tutoring students on a one to one basis.
I began my teaching career after a truly inspirational A level Chemistry teacher led me to study a Chemistry degree at York University, and I really believe without her I would not be where I am today. I started in a fully comprehensive school in York, before moving back to the Midlands in 2010. Since then I have worked at 3 schools, the last 2 being high performing grammar schools. I am currently Head of Chemistry at a grammar school, and still have as much passion for teaching as I always have had.
My ethos is very much focussed around “students get one shot”. I believe that if a student has a dream to be a doctor, or a vet, or a pharmacist (sometimes from a very young age) that we as teachers are key in making that dream a reality. Similarly, if young people have no desire to continue with Chemistry past GCSE level they should still be able to thoroughly enjoy that experience. Equally important, they should have the confidence to believe they can succeed.
Anybody can be a star, with the right guidance!
I would hear of students who have lost their passion for Chemistry due to various reasons, and that’s what led me to begin one to one tutoring. As time has gone on, I have found myself being inundated with requests through word of mouth from other students I have helped. It was very difficult to say no due to simply not having any more time to offer these one to one sessions. So I decided to find a way to help more people in the same time, and so Stellar tutoring was born!
The day Stellar was born came about after getting 5 enquiries in one night - all from recommendations, all desperate for help. It really bothered me having to turn them away but I literally had no more time to offer! I knew I needed to find a way to offer a personalised service whilst still being able to help as many young people as possible.
The key to that is small group sessions. I pride myself on knowing my students really well so I will only ever take very small groups at one time in order to still offer that level of personal service. I am on hand after each session to answer any questions, and also offer one to one sessions for 30 minutes for those times when you would like a little more individual attention and help. The best part about this model is only paying for quality service as and when needed. It's affordable and still effective at getting the best out of these future stars!
My gorgeous Weimaraner Stella was always there watching while I tutored young people. She always wanted to be involved, so she had to be a part of this company. Naming it after her was a no brainer, and by adding the "r" and turning into "Stellar" it embraces my passion for finding new Chemistry "stars"!
